As the name implies, Highland Beach is on a little mount with a comfortable width of white sand to pitch a tent. If you spend the night here, the sunsets over the Gulf of Mexico are a serene experience, and on a clear night a walk down the beach will reveal a kaleidoscope of stars. Be careful with the odd alligator. They like to hang out by the outflow from the wilderness waterway.
More likely however, you will see plenty of horseshoe crabs, that come to this beach to breed.
