The hottest day yet. “Good god. Am I in Florida? Even the air feels like a steamy sauna.” I shouted.
At least a roll in the water was enough to give a temporary reprieve, but today I’ve had to do one every 15 minutes to avoid overheating. I wished I had brought a wetsuit. My undergarments were completely soaked in sweat.

I rounded Point Wilson where a small lighthouse marks the entrance into Puget Sound, and Vancouver Island suddenly faded out of view.
“Until we see each other again. Who knows when that will be. You gave me safe passage. Thank you.” I said as if the Island could hear me.
I felt that the island and I shared a personal relationship. It could have kept me waiting for days to round any of the many capes and headlands or dared me to take out to sea with mild conditions only to switch on the storms when I was most vulnerable. It did none of those things. It took good care of me.
